Monthly Talk: Biological control of invasive alien trees Saturday, 18 May 2019 5:30

Monthly Talk Biological control of invasive alien trees

THE KOGELBERG BRANCH OF THE BOTANICAL SOCIETY OF SOUTH AFRICA would like to invite you to their May Monthly Talk: "Prospects and progress with biological control of invasive alien trees in the Western Cape" by John Hoffmann, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Cape Town.

All welcome, free entrance, and come early for wine and a chat.
5.30 pm for 6.00 pm @ the Nivenia Hall, Harold Porter Gardens.

John Hoffmann will provide some insight into biological control that has been used as one of the management options for reducing the invasiveness of several Australian tree species in South Africa. A suit of deliberately-introduced insect species and one fungus species are now widespread and common on the different tree species. The challenge is to determine how much these introduced agents are curbing the reproduction and longevity of their long-lived hosts. The results of some long-term studies will be presented which show that, while biological control is not providing an overnight solution, considerable progress has been made and that there are encouraging prospects going forward.

Fynbos and Rock Art at Phillipskop Wednesday, 22 May 2019 2:30

Fynbos and Rock Art at Phillipskop

Phillipskop Cave was recently added to the Cradle of Human Culture Route as a subsidiary site. Anna Whitehouse will be our archaeology guide to explain the significance of the rock art in the cave. Phillipskop also boasts wonderful fynbos and birdlife. Chris Whitehouse will guide us through the fynbos veld experience.
Participants should be walking-fit and, for obvious reasons, the excursion will be weather dependent.
The cost is R120 for adults and R60 for children. All proceeds go to environmental education at Phillipskop and WCC. Booking essential, mail anina.wcc@gmail.com for booking or more info.
